9 ways to find new story ideas for your novel
If you’ve got an idea for a story or a novel but you find yourself staring at a blank page, then check out our guide for overcoming writer’s block.
However, if you don’t have an idea yet, then you’re in the right place! Here are 9 ways to find new story ideas for your novel or piece of fiction…
1) Read Widely
Reading books, articles, and essays in various genres can spark new ideas. Pay attention to what interests you, and consider how you might put your own spin on similar themes or topics.
2) Watch the news
Daily, all over the world, interesting things are happening that would make for fantastic stories. Stephen King got the idea for Mr Mercedes when he heard about a woman who drove her car into a job fair outside a McDonalds.
3) Draw from Personal Experiences
Reflect on your own life experiences, interests, and passions. Think about events, people, or places that have had a significant impact on you, and consider how you might incorporate them into a story.
4) Ask What-If Questions
You can arrive at interesting story concepts simply by asking some ‘What if?’ questions. They help you to explore different scenarios and possibilities. Changing history is always a great way to create an interesting story. For example, in coming up with The Man in the High Castle, Philip K Dick simply asked, ‘What if the Nazis had won the war?’
5) Use Writing Prompts
Writing prompts can provide a starting point for generating ideas. There are many websites, books, and apps that offer writing prompts on various themes and topics.
6) Brainstorm with Others
Collaborate with friends, family members, or fellow writers to brainstorm ideas together. Sometimes, discussing ideas with others can help spark new insights and perspectives.
7) Keep a Journal
Keep a notebook or digital document where you jot down random thoughts, observations, or snippets of conversation that inspire you. You never know when these ideas might come in handy.
8) Research Historical Events or Folklore
Explore historical events, myths, legends, and folklore for inspiration. There are infinite gems – intriguing stories – that could be reimagined in a new context.
9) Keep a dream diary
Countless writers have gotten some of their most successful work straight out of dreams! Keep a notebook by your bed and start jotting down themes from your dreams when you wake up, as you’ll often quickly forget them.
Remember, inspiration can strike at any time, so be open to new ideas and keep experimenting until you find something that excites you. And don’t be afraid to write down even the smallest or silliest ideas—you never know where they might lead!
